Every child has some sensory issue or another but they are not always pronounced. Then there are those kids whose lives are turned upside down in a moment, feet above their heads due to the difficulties they have in processing sensory cues. And still others who under register sensory signals or don't seem to receive them at all. And all sorts in between. If you have a child with significant sensory deficits or delays then you know what I'm talking about and you've come to the right place for some help. This book is a godsend. A goldmine. And it's for you.The book is behaviorally specific and is broken down by brief but descriptive behaviors (such as "rubs zippers on pillows" or "reacts to the smell of air fresheners"), approximately 200 of them, that one can look at and then read a short synopsis of why the behavior may or is likely happening followed by 4-8 suggestions on how the parent/ caretaker can help the child deal with that particular sensory signal. While the ideas to help really begin to repeat themselves they are still a great value and organized as a quick and beneficial reference tool. (Some of the ideas to help are as simple as reminding us that even if the behavior annoys us it can still be okay for them to do and help them emotionally regulate themselves.) And that's the book (there's the table of contents that is stylized as an index of behaviors). A lot of people that I know could benefit from this. And while this is written primarily toward the parent this book is an excellent resource and should be found in nursery schools, Sunday schools, elementary schools, and other places where people have to have a lot of contact with kids. Dentist's office, children's ward in a hospital. You name it. And if you didn't know what words like "proprioceptive" and "vestibular" mean, you'll be increasing your vocabulary, so prepare yourself.

A stellar beginning book for physicians, parents, or educators suspecting/ questioning sensory behaviors.(The standard book offered is too overwhelming)Sensory Signals' easy format and language is most welcome; e.g. Holds It Together At School-Melts Down At Home orDoes Not Tolerate Haircuts/ Nail Trimming, then gives neurological underpinning causing "sensory short circuit".This book became our guide in concisely outlining behaviors, supporting the behaviors with neurological findings, thusly creating a favorable bid for classroom support.Forever grateful to the author for writing and Amazon for carrying. Invaluable!!!Should be required to reading for all pediatricians, parents and educators and a staple in their professional libraries and waiting rooms.

As an OT with A LOT of books, this is an absolutely must have for any pediatric occupational therapist. I reference this book all the time when writing evaluations. Out of the 20+ books I own regarding pediatric OT, this is hands down one of my top three favorites and most frequently used. BUY. THIS. BOOK

Instead of having to read through a lengthy text to understand your child's issues (if you understand the pedagogical and esoteric phrasing), this book is more like a "go-to" manual that separates each issue into a page-long synopsis of what is going on and what you can do about it. Each page covers a different issue, in alphabetical order for easy flip-through reading, and it jumps right to the point: "My child does this, so XYZ is a great way to deal with it in a positive and loving way." Not a book for those wishing to understand the origin or genetics or background of each issue, but great for parents or teachers who have kids with multiple issues that need quick addressing. In the time it takes to flip to a page and scan it, you have a solution for dealing with it at your fingertips. I've got about a dozen other, more detailed and lengthy books on my shelves, and this was by far the easiest and most helpful of them all in helping me take care of my daughter, who has countless sensory integration issues.

This book is a great resource for identifying triggers and tips to help. I do wish it was broken down into sections for Auditory, Tactile, Proprioceptive, etc., but I realize that so amny over lap. Perhaps having color tabs at the endge of the pages for each sense it discusses would help a bit. Otherwise it seems almost jumbled as it's not grouped. Also, The book discusses fight and flight but it seems to leave out the freeze reflex portion of things. Still a great source of info.

I'd recommend this to anyone that works with or cares for kids or others on an ongoing basis: parents, therapists, teachers, caregivers, etc. we all have little quirks that can be helped by this book, if one wanted help for those quirks, and I really can't think of a quirk that isn't covered here. The information and tactics in this book are essential rose caring for those with asd, ADHD, spd, and odd, or similar disorders or symptoms.I'll be referring to it again and again. It is a good book to own, rather than to borrow.

My go-to book. I take this everywhere with me. I love how easy it is to find an area of concern, the brief description and the very helpful suggestions to help my child through her sensory overload. I've shown it to her pediatrician, OT, PT and SI. they all agree that this is one of the best.

I LOVE this book! As mom to a five year old with SPD and ADHD, time to read is precious, and relevant and usable info is even more precious. This book breaks down your child's sensory signals and give you ways to help your child using those signals. No hunting through pages and pages of info to find what your child needs. The format is perfect, the info is valuable. I've also found it helpful in sharing info with family members, etc. who help care for my child. We are going to visit my husband's family over the holidays, so I've taken info from this book (and others that Angie has written) and created a sort of guide for his family that is short, simple, to the point that they can read and understand in a short time. Angie really understands our sensory, sensational kiddos - kuddos to a great book!!
