About the Author
Msgr. Joseph M. Champlin (1930-2008) was a prolific writer on a variety of pastoral care and spirituality concerns. He served at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Warners, New York. He previously was rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in the Diocese of Syracuse, his hometown. Jarret, C.S.C., is an assistant provincial of the Congregation of Holy Cross, United States Province of Priests and Brothers. He previously served as superior and rector of Moreau Seminary at the University of Notre Dame. Ordained a Holy Cross priest in April of 1992, he also served in parish ministry at Christ the King Parish in South Bend, Indiana, and as pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Granger, Indiana. Jarret also was a rector in an undergraduate residence hall and counselor to ND President Rev. Edward Malloy, C.S.C. Jarret coauthored Together for Life and contributed to The Cross, Our Only Hope, The Gift of the Cross, The Gift of Hope, and The Notre Dame Book of Prayer.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is assisting families with Catholic funeral Mass planning. It is inexpensive and offers the complete selection of collects, antiphons, and (to me) MOST important the recommended lectionary readings. The cost of the book is low enough that it can be given to the bereaved family to review and study, if necessary and/or convenient without concern for its being returned. I use this book on a regular basis in bereavement ministry.
Joseph M. Champlin's "Through Death to Life" is a great grace to those responsible for celebrating Funeral liturgies.Many families desire and are prepared to take an active and conscious role in a funeral liturgy. I have found and I believe they also that Champlain's resource is very user friendly. Selections of the many options that families have made contribute to a liturgy that celebrates the mystery of death and resurrection.In one calendar year we have had as many as 70 funerals. I wanted a funeral mass, but knew nothing about how to prepare for one. Most of my family are not Catholic so If I died before them they wouldn't know how to do a funeral mass either. This little book is simple to read, pick the readings and prayers. This is a step by step help book that you can leave with your important papers so that your funeral will be as you would like it to be. I found this book helpful and comforting.
Great for helping to plan funerals, especially the readings. Not so great for choosing the prayers since it doesn't group them as they are in the Roman Missal, so a person unfamiliar with the missal might choose prayers from three different Masses.
Very happy with this booklet we use it in our church and since we have several people helping with funeral arrangements I ordered 5 books. This has worked out well and it is an updated version.
Its hard to say 'I love it' considering it to help with a funeral Mass. But, my sister and I used it to do the funeral Mass for my dad. It was very helpful and gave all the selections of readings and responsorials that we needed. It also provided choices to recommend for children vs adults. I would recommend it.
This is a must have resource for anyone who assists families in preparing for Catholic funerals.
