I would have agreed with this author some years ago, when I marveled at the ignorance inherent in a religious versus a scientific view of the universe, but then I came to understand the Bell curve, and what it means in any given society. The fact of the matter is that most of our society is not capable of understanding a scientific explanation of life, conceives of living as primarily survival and reproduction, and believes in magic and unseen forces as controlling their lives. Religion is tribal in nature, as is most of our population. The Civil War is very much alive in the Deep South, and many people truly believe that they have a personal relationship with Jesus. While it is true that the educated class is evolving in its beliefs as we learn more about our universe, the uneducated or religious-based educated people are not evolving at anywhere near the same rate. As far as I can see, religion will always be with us, will always be tribal in nature, and will always be divisive. It is in the nature of the beast.I have also discovered, after researching my publication, Bible Bullies, that the people who use the Bible to persecute others are not interested in facts--they are "faith" based, not fact based. No number of facts will convince them that they are wrong. Evolution is wrong, for example, since Satan created the fossil record to confuse people. Try arguing with that.I am retired, but I work with my wife, a psychologist, in furnishing the psychometric aspects of her testing. What I have discovered in the last decade is that mental illness often takes the form of religiosity, or of right-wing fanaticism. This is true in all religions, whether it be Judaism, Christianity or Islam. I've come to think recently that the terrorist activities we see--whether shooting up a family planning clinic by a Christian or shooting up a workplace party by a Muslim--are related through the common denominator of mental illness that takes the form of religious fanaticism. Blaming this on Islam and pushing for a Christian nation is eerily evocative of Hitler's declaring Germany a Christian nation and moving to fascism where nationalism and ethnicity are paramount. No, only the highly educated among us are evolving. The remainder of humanity still needs an opiate as a palliative for their dreary lives, and a quick and easy way to salve their consciences and believe in a better life in the hereafter. Trying to disprove their beliefs is an impossibility, and they will never read this book, if, for no other reason, they lack the intellect.Until our society tackles ignorance and mental illness, the day will not come when religion will diminish its hold on the masses.
As others have pointed out, the title is not only misleading, it really doesn't adhere to the premise of most of the book. The first 60% is a history of world religions. The next 30% is a review on state vs. religion issues. Only in about the last 10% does the author make a lofty and aspirational (but not very convincing) case that future generations will shrug off religions that have existed for millennia because, well the internet, and more science.Seems like what might have started as a 20 page pamphlet from an atheist wishlist that the author realized needed to be padded with another 200 some pages to be plausible as a book. Not a bad review of world religions though. It has that going for it.
The book does a great job of explaining the major religions of the world and how they came to be. However, I believe the thesis to be unsound. Religion will be around for a long time. Christianity, for example, has changed with the times. Christian churches, even those which claim to believe that the Bible is 100% the word of God have female ministers and those who don't believe the Bible have adapted to social changes. Religions will continue to adapt, or to attract people marginalized by society (American citizens who join ISIS for example). There will always be a market for religion. However, I hope it becomes a niche market. The book itself could have used an editor. Typographical and grammar errors abound and sometimes the word choices of the author are creative. However, that does not detract from the work the author put into the book.Overall, I enjoyed the book.
Fromthe very beginning has serious editing issues. Uncoherent patching. Very first chapter states three possible outcome for next 100 years1. blah blah blah2. blah blah blah3. is nowhere to be foundFrom 2 it jumps to totally different subject. Are there messing pages in kindle editionAre pages formated and put together at random?Dont get me wrong. I am sick and tired of religion as much or even more than author. But this poorly formated book gives all of us who fight against ignorance of religion a bad reputation. There is an old wise poem in persian language that says: Either know what you are talking about or be silent. I really wanted to like this book and have a good review. But unfortunatey I am disappinted.
The title of the book is a little bit deceiving. I am single and at first I thought that this was some sort of book whose intent was to act as guide or reasoning exercise as to why someone would raise their children as humanists or atheists. However its clear that what the author tries to convey with the title is that; in the future, our "children", in a very broad sense of the word, meaning future human generations, will be, in fact, atheists. I would change the title to something like: "The history of religions and our future without them". Had it not been for the very helpful reviews of other readers I would have probably not picked this book.Notwithstanding the confusing title of the book, I'd like to say that this is a little jewel and that I would have actually paid for the download, and that I would have done so gladly. I got it for free, but I will certainly try to make a donation to the author. The book is well researched and well written, it gives you a pretty good background on the history of religions throughout the development of humanity and examines how religions are no longer necessary in our modern world or at least in a near future world where reason (hopefully) will be the main drive for humanity.
I found this to be an excellent book, one of the best non-theist book I've ever read. I especially enjoyed the author's exploration of ancient religions. The book is, in my opinion, essential reading for non-theists and believers alike.
