Very user friendly with some great tips. I will be "ABD" in August and used this text for my final "Methods of Inquiry" class. I found the information useful for both quantitative and qualitative writing. I will definitely be using this as a guide when I start my dissertation this fall!
I reviewed it as a possible purchase for doctoral students in my training program, and I was disappointed. I though it was a superficial gloss on methods with too little on the process, particularly selecting and managing the committee. Case studies would help as would more attention to the sticky places and how to avoid them/get unstuck. I was expecting something more like A PhD is Not Enough.
This was an amazing description of the dissertation process as well as a guide to understanding the mind frame of a person preparing to complete a doctoral program. It was a general overview, so it could apply to any program. The authors also made sure to address each readers learning style. The authors used charts, examples, and provided tips for success. I was highly pleased with this book. I am now better able to understand the process for obtaining a doctoral degree as well as what it takes to write a dissertation.
I am in the beginning stages of my dissertation and this has been hugely helpful. The beginning and end of the book should be read at the beginning of any phd program and again when you are ready for your dissertation. The middle of the book addresses methods etc, and will be very relevant as I work on my proposal, IRB, etc. I really like the tone and how the authors write ... It's is clear and easy to understand.
This was a comprehensive and thorough exploration of the process of writing a dissertation from choosing a topic to publication. It includes ample detail on both quantitative and qualitative data, and includes great sections on "student tips". The one thing I wished I had seen more of was better information on how to overcome some of the emotional battles involved. The title implies it's going to be more of a hand-holding book than it is. It's really a statement of facts and examples.. which isn't bad! Everyone responds differently to certain tones. Overall, I would recommend it for any student embarking on this journey (like me).
